Margareta Wahlstrom, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction, told The Daily Star that there is a lack of public awareness and knowledge on the correct procedures following a major disaster.

The Lebanese government must urgently adopt a response plan for emergencies such as earthquakes, the U.N. disaster risk expert has warned. "It’s very important, for the future safety of urban areas, to look at how they are structured and the quality of the buildings," she said.
