Mauritius: Environment Minister announces series of measures in case of natural disasters

The Minister of Environment, National Emergency Centre and Beach Authority, Mr Raj Dayal, announced a series of proactive measures to mitigate the effects and consequences of natural disasters at a meeting with stakeholders of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Committee held on Saturday at the Line Barracks, Port Louis.

Minister Raj Dayal emphasised that appropriate actions will be taken in cases of natural disasters and stressed that a team from the Special Mobile Force will be on stand by on a 24 hours basis to intervene during any calamities.

Furthermore, he said that a helicopter of the squadron will be ready to intervene within a delay of 15 minutes. An armored ambulance will also be available for intervention teams. Firefighters as well as hospitals, which have a space reserved for landing helicopters, will be involved.

According to him, simulation exercises should be organised regularly in order to best prepare the various protagonists and cleaning of rivers and canals has also started in the north to avoid water accumulation.
