"The future of charity work in the developing world must be 'disaster prevention', not just picking up the pieces afterwards", says Erin Gray, Press Officer for the Edinburgh-based Mercy Corps' European headquarters, in an opinion piece for the Scotsman highlighting several risk reduction initiatives - including measures that help local people help themselves, early warning and monitoring, reclaiming flooded land to grow crops among them.
