Middle East: Call to reduce disaster risk

Cairo - Arab and Islamic nations discuss preparation and mitigation to climate change and to reduce the risk of disaster, in the initial meeting of the new established Disaster Risk Reduction Center, in Cairo. Located in the Arab League building, the center was born in March and held its first meeting this week, when was defined the role of the new center in the region.

On the occasion, climate change and the increasing population were pointed as major risks of disaster. The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) was represented by its top official, Margareta Wahlstrom: "Climate change is the most serious challenge to our culture and civilization right now".

According to UN, the impact from disasters are related to population growth, environment degradation and global warming.
