Myanmar setting up global positioning system for earthquake monitoring
The new Global Positioning System (GPS) will be set up in four Myanmar cities lying on the country's main live fault, to monitor earthquakes. It will be operational by the end of this year, according to the seismological department.
Furthermore, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is committed to helping Myanmar develop an early warning system for Tsunamis and other natural hazards with the establishment of two seismograph stations and two sea-level measurement stations, according to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology Department (MHD). Japan is also providing assistance with a seismographic network and record centre.
