In Nigeria, the National Emergency Management Agency chief believes that children should be centrally engaged in reducing the risk of disasters to reduce the impacts on communities, according to a This Day report highlighting the disaster risks in the country and various initiatives led by Nigerians and international agencies.

Director General Mohammed Sani Sidi said, "Disasters and disaster risk is on the rise. Children represent about 60 per cent of those affected by death, injuries and diseases from conditions that are exacerbated by disasters. Disasters also disrupt education."
