With nearly 40 graves already lost, locals are using coconut trunks to create a barrier and slow down coastal erosion.

"Our community started using coconut trunks as a barrier to stop the graves from sinking. The first row of graves was already destroyed, and we had to act fast," said Amos Kamoda, a resident.

They are using a traditional method called ‘Balibali’, creating fences or sea-walls from coconut trunks to slow erosion.

"We are doing what we can while waiting for authorities to step in. The coconut trunks are a temporary solution, but they are helping," said Stephen Orimalefo, spokesperson for the project.
