Pakistan: Court summons officials to explain flood protection strategy

The International News reports that "The Peshawar High Court (PHC) summoned secretaries of the auqaf, irrigation, environment, planning and development departments of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to explain their measures for protection against floods and other natural disasters and removal of encroachments from riverbanks," following a petition claiming that land mafia was encroaching on riverbanks and turning the land into commercial and residential areas, which, it said, might lead to floods in the areas around the river.

The bench also asked the director of the Khyber Pakhtun-khwa Meteorology Department to present his disaster preparedness plan and dissemination of information. The chief justice stated that "the Provincial Disaster Management Agency usually became active after disasters instead of playing its role in prevention of disasters."
