The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPERCO) has started the hydrological modeling of the upper Indus catchment using satellite remote sensed rainfall data, with the aid of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. Japan will help to enhance Pakistan's capacities in early warning infrastructure using GIS technologies for flood assessment, management and decision support, reported The News International. The project is the implementation of an initiative suggested by UNESCO in 2011 to improve flood forecasting and the risk mapping of the Indus flood plains. Other organization collaborating on the project include National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Federal Flood Commission (FFC), Office of the Indus Water Commissioner and local academic partners with the support of the Government of Japan and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
