Peru's central government is expected to spend 820.8 million soles (US$292.2 million) for disaster risk reduction, a 16 percent increase from a year earlier, Peruvian Economy and Finance Ministry (MEF) reported Monday.

Luis Miguel Castilla, MEF's head, stressed the Ollanta Humala's administration has put a special focus on increasing the financial coverage for the prevention and relief of natural disasters.

The Finance minister noted that US$ 228.8 million will go towards implementing preventive actions such as reinforcing infrastructures and building safe schools and hospitals.

"The remaining fund are intended for preparatory actions such as the implementation of emergency operations centers, establishment and improvement of local early-warning systems and provision of humanitarian goods," Castilla said.

MEF's top official continued, "This work is aimed at enhancing disaster prevention activity as part of a strategy to have available resources so we can be prepared for any casualty. In this matter, the government always seeks to act proactively".
