A disaster risk reduction project run by a Spanish development financing institution is now underway in the provinces of Catanduanes and Camarines Sur. Three days of disaster risk reduction training took place last week as part of the school-based education and awareness on disaster preparedness and mitigation project. It was attended by selected teachers and pupils from 12 elementary schools in San Miguel and Caramoran.

The project which will last for one year seeks to strengthen the capacity and accountability of the school system in disaster preparedness and mitigation to reduce the risks of disasters to children and their families. The participants are expected to improve their awareness and understanding of the geological-meteorological condition of Bicol region and Catanduanes, familiarize themselves on the safety measures before, during and after hazards occur, and identify their roles in disaster risk reduction and come up with activities that will be implemented in their respective schools.
