Philippines: Seven points in disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation

Talking at a recent civil society and government conference on climate change adaptation and planning for disaster risk reduction and management ESSC Research Director Pedro Walpole singled out seven points that are critical to the Philippine context.

These points are:
- Watershed management and integration
- Classification of events and the extremes
- Better early warning methods and communications during extreme weather events
- Thinking out of the forests and understanding better landslides and debris
- Relocation, vulnerability, and accountability
- Temperature and droughts
- Sea level rise
- Understanding event recurrence will facilitate planning, designing, and disaster preparedness.
