Learning how to navigate the PPRD South Risk Atlas is much easier now as the Atlas User Manual is available for download, in English and French, and in English and Arabic, on the Programme web site. The document illustrates all the main features and functionalities of the PPRD South Risk Atlas and makes it easier exploring the maps illustrating the level of hazard, exposure - populations and key infrastructures exposed to hazards - vulnerability and risk to earthquakes, floods and landslides in the PPRD South Partner Countries.

The PPRD South Risk Atlas consists of four main components:

- A web-based GIS system developed by the Italian Civil Protection Department. The GIS was adapted to the Mediterranean context and developed to calculate and display on a map the level of risk for a specific hazard at sub-national level;

- A methodology for assessing the level of risk for a specific area based on previous experiences of risk assessment in regional contexts, in particular on the EU Guidelines for Risk Assessment and Mapping and the UNDP and University of Colombia Prevalent Vulnerability Index models. The PPRD South risk assessment methodology was designed taking into account the current availability of exposure and vulnerability data in international databases, such as the UN development indicators system.

- A collection of disaster, hazard, exposure, vulnerability and resilience data collected from international sources or provided by the PPRD South Partner Countries.

- A network of risk information experts from the PPRD South Partner Countries who work in coordination with the PPRD South Executive Director on the further development of the national risk databases and mapping methodologies.

The PPRD South Risk Atlas is being developed through a participatory process. A first “regionally standardised” version was developed by the PPRD South team. The results are now being illustrated and discussed with the Partner Countries to evaluate and to identify possible necessary improvements concerning risk assessment and mapping methodologies.
