Kiribati President Anote Tong has called on the international community to address the effects of climate change that could wipe out the entire Pacific archipelago, reports 3 News.

Tong said that his Cabinet last week endorsed a plan to buy nearly 6,000 acres on Fiji's main island, Viti Levu. He has denied that the plan to buy the land is directly to do with the rising sea levels.

"I know the world doesn't seem to hear us, and still they are enjoying what they are doing with this gas and all of that, and somebody [is] reaping the consequences, the penalty of what they've done," said community leader Reverend Eria Maerere.
