The ministry of Disaster Management and Refugee Affairs (Midimar) has launched a web portal that will facilitate disaster data and information sharing as well as improve response to disasters.

The portal has been developed with the support of the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) based in Kenya.

Seraphine Mukantabana, said this web portal will help the public to get accurate information that can guide them to take measures for Disaster prevention, preparedness and response.

“This web portal will play an important role in early warning. The citizens will fetch necessary information including warning messages that guide them how to behave to minimize impact of eventual hazards” said Minister Mukantabana.

This web portal will contain all necessary information related to disaster risk reduction such as: disaster risk maps, publications and research reports, disaster damages figures, warning messages and disaster mitigation strategies.

According to Jean Baptiste Nsengiyumva, Director of Risk Reduction and Preparedness in MIDIMAR, this web portal is expected to promote research and policy development about disaster in Rwanda.

H added that this web portal will also be a directory to other useful information related to weather forecast, agriculture, climate change and any other information associated with disaster risk reduction.
