The report 'Civil nuclear power at risk of tsunamis' released by the Foundation for Science and Technology identifies the nuclear power plants which are the most vulnerable to tsunamis. Most of them are situated in east and southeast of Asia.
"The location of nuclear installations does not only have implications for their host countries but also for the areas which could be affected by radioactive leaks," said Joaquín Rodríguez-Vidal, lead author of the study and researcher at the Geodynamics and Paleontology Department of the University of Huelva in an interview with Homeland Security News Wire. Mr Rodríguez-Vidal recommends authorities to learn from the Fukushima disaster and to draw up local analyses that take into account the seismic amplification of nuclear plants and determine the adaptation of installation demonstrated in the study.
