Sri Lanka: International disaster reduction day celebration

On the occasion of International Disaster Reduction Day, more than 60 teachers were trained on the School Safety Guideline developed by Ministry of Disaster Management and Ministry of Education. All 60 schools came up the work plan to implement the School Safety Guideline.

The initiative was taken under DIPECHO VI- Action Plan where Oxfam GB and Practical Action working jointly as consortitium. Various partners such as Save the Children, GIZ, Handicap International also joined this event to contribute in the preparation of School Safety Planning.

Trained teachers organized various events at the school level to encourage children to take lead role in Disaster Risk Reduction. Youth from village level also joined the celebration of International Day and got 3 days training on Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction. More than 80 youths were trained who will take the lead role in facilitating the Community Risk Reduciton Process at the village level by encouraging community to organized Risk Assessment, Disaster Risk Reduction Planning, Implementation focusing on Mitigation.
