It is now time to understand and take precautions to minimize the impacts of disasters instead of providing relief once the disasters have hit says Sri Lanka's Ministry of Disaster Management in preparation for the national symposium this week.

“The objectives of the symposium are to increase public awareness and understanding of disaster via climate related issues and identify areas of research edto address such issues.

More than 40 research projects important to Sri Lanka covering geological hazards such as 1andslides; risk management through mapping and GIS; the health sector and its preparedness for natural disasters; the tsunami recovery process and lessons learnt; coastal hazards and their management are among topics to be presented and discussed during the two-day event.

Over 200 leading scientists, professionals, media persons and other stakeholders are registered to attend this symposium.”

The event is supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations international Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR).
