A storm is coming!! What do I need to do? When the storm hits what do I do? What about when the storm has passed and the clean-up needs to be done?
The Attorney-General’s Department School Education Program at Australian Emergency Management Institute has developed the Before the Storm – A game for iPhone and iPod Touch.
Before the Storm is an educational game for middle year students designed to get them thinking about storm preparation and disaster resilience.
While a mad scientist builds a world-conquering robot, his hapless cyborg offsider tries to prepare the house for storms. Students need to help iGor search the house to find all the items he needs for his disaster/emergency survival kit, then use these items to prepare and repair the property, before and after the storm hits.
The game plays over four stages:
- Storm preparation
- Storm threatening
- During the storm
- Clean-up after the storm.
Based on the Australian Government, Attorney General’s Department’s Storm Action Guide, this game has been developed as part of the implementation of the National Strategy for Disaster Resilience endorsed by the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) in 2011.
For each stage, players have to complete a series of small tasks in order to complete the major quest.
It is expected to take students between 30 and 40 minutes to play from start to finish. The game can be replayed with some amusing animations and events that the player may not spot the first time round.
