Storing bananas for up to one year might seem unthinkable, but thanks to a traditional Vanuatu method of preparing and storing, it's been a life saver during times of natural disasters.

"This process shows the resilience of our ancestors who came up with the idea to survive during times of food shortage such as cyclone seasons," said Vanustella Seiroa, a Tour Guide at the site.

The task of preserving bananas falls to the women of the village, who gather together to mash the unripe bananas and place the mash into baskets made of coconut leaves.

The bananas are then dried and placed in a pit lined with coconut and banana leaves, where they remain for up to six or seven months," Mr Seiroa said.
