Writing for the Guardian, Lisa Bachelor reports an UK government statement calling for householders at risk of flooding to take responsibility for preventing future damage to their homes despite the fact that this may not reduce the cost of their insurance or even guarantee that they can buy flood cover. Richard Benyon, the minister for natural environment and fisheries, confirmed the non renewal of the Statement of Principles, an agreement concluded between the insurance industry and the government to ensure flood-hit householders can buy flood cover for their homes, that ends in June.

Lisa Bachelor further compares flood risk coverage in other countries (France, Netherlands, Iceland, Germany and USA), giving examples of national insurances or partnerships between the state and the insurance industry.
