UNDP, ECOWAS to help Nigeria tackle disaster

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have pledged to help Nigeria's effort to reduce disaster risk in the country, reports the Daily Trust.

The pledge came at the opening of the two-day national sensitization workshop on the Sendai framework for Disaster Risk Reduction in Abuja where the UNDP Country Director Dr. Pa Lamin Beyai applauded the National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) for taking the lead in designing a national strategic plan.

He said, "We must find local solutions because they are very crucial to disaster risks reduction. What works in one community may not naturally work in another. We must also promote inclusion. We all know that during disaster, women, youths, the elderly and people with disabilities are often affected the most. Everyone needs to be included. The elderly with their wisdom and unique perspectives and the youths with their strength and courage to tackle issues at hand," he added.
