Ethiopia: Prepares draft programme for climate change adaptation

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) said Ethiopia has prepared a Draft Program of Adaptation to Climate Change.

Speaking at the discussion on the draft here Wednesday EPA Director General Dr. Tewoldeberhan Gebreegziabher said Ethiopia is developing hydro, wind and geothermal power to cope up with the challenges of climate change.

He said effort is underway to use ethanol and other renewable energies for transport vehicles.

Dr.Tewolde said preparing such program is a survival that needs active mobilization of the public.

The director said though climate change has immense consequences the draft includes problems that have already occurred because of climate change and the responsible organizations for the implementation.

Accordingly, the draft highlighted the expansion of human and vet health services, infrastructure, disaster prevention system and organizational preparedness at community level to cope up impacts of climate change.

It also includes the need for capacity building to protect pesticides and reduction of biodiversity, prevent depletion of land, disasters for agricultural productive and water supply,

He said financial and technological support is expected to channel this year for the implementation of the program as per the Copenhagen Accord.

Participants drawn from government offices, NGOs, higher learning institutions as well as from pertinent organization are taking part in the two-day discussion.
