Zimbabwe: As piped water dries up, city dwellers turn to carrying water

'There is no doubt that the effects of climate change are far reaching as low rainfall has also meant that communities must carefully manage resources such as groundwater,'said Jeff Makiwa a climate change researcher in the Ministry of Environment, reports Alertnet. In Bulawayo municipality, Zimbabwe, there are cities which only have 2 months worth of water in reserves due to lack of rain. About 70 percent of Zimbabwe’s rural population relies on groundwater, according to the Zimbabwe National Water Authority, a government department managing water for domestic and industrial use. Researchers are worried that groundwater usage of the cities could cause the country's watertables to fall.
