India: Distress migration increased in Odisha's Ganjam due to climate change

The prolonged drought occurences in Odisha are believed to be the key factor behind the migration of poor landless agriculture labourers and small farmers to other states, reports Orissa Diary.

According to the article, in a consultation today of the Ganjam Disaster Response Forum, the suggestions discussed to mitigate this migration included expansion of livelihood options of the communities, climate change adaptation practices and opportunities, insurance and social security to the migrants, effective implementation of the inter-state migrant workmen. Provision must also be made, it was discussed, for better employment opportunities for the skilled labour force in Ganjam, Odisha.
