Bangladesh: Disaster-tolerant houses for poor on cards

The entire allocation for test relief (TR) and gratuitous relief (GR) works will be transferred for building disaster resilient houses for the poor in the country. The government has decided to start constructing the disaster resilience houses within this month as per its pledge, sources in the disaster management and relief ministry said. According to the sources, although the disaster management and relief ministry had a plan of building around 32,000 houses in the 2018-19 fiscal year, it would now build 12,000 houses initially in the next two-and-a-half months.

The houses will be built with government funds for the safety of people living in the country’s disaster-prone areas people. The government will gradually build a total of 300,000 houses for the ultra-poor and people in disaster-prone areas in its present tenure, the sources said.

Ministry officials said they have prepared separate lists of around 300,000 poor and ultra-poor people in 64 districts, who are vulnerable to different disaster risks. All the vulnerable people will be provided houses gradually as state assistance within the five-year tenure of the present government, they added.
