CIFAL Newcastle has a PhD Scholarship opportunity available for students interested in undertaking research in the area of climate change. As part of this research project, the successful student will explore the growing need for local level implementation of more effective measures to reduce the effect of climate change vulnerability. This research proposes to develop an integrated framework for effective climate change response with practical implications for local government, policy-makers and community stakeholders.
CIFAL Newcastle is seeking expressions of interest from a highly motivated and enthusiastic applicant interested in pursuing a PhD program in the research area of climate change under the supervision of Associate Professor Temitope Egbelakin. The impact of climate change is now gaining attention globally and becoming a pressing concern for Australia especially with the unprecedented experiences of higher temperatures, reduced rainfall and frequent weather-related hazard events. The utilisation of institutional instruments such as strategies, policies and plans (i.e. water restrictions, carbon taxing, land-use policies, waste legislation etc.) have proven to significantly influence the manner with which communities engage in practices that could reduce the impact of climate of change. The research project will explore the growing need for local level implementation of more effective measures to reduce the effect of climate change vulnerability. This research proposes to develop an integrated framework for effective climate change response with practical implications for local government, policy-makers and community stakeholders. Please note that the specific direction of the project can be negotiated with the supervisor. The project will be undertaken in partnership between CIFAL Newcastle and the University of Newcastle. CIFAL Newcastle is a United Nations training centre with a focus on disaster risk reduction and sustainable development.
PhD Scholarship details
Funding: $28,092 per annum (2020 rate) indexed annually. The living allowance scholarship is for 3.5 years and the tuition fee scholarship is for four years.

Eligibility Criteria
- The successful applicant must meet the University of Newcastle’s admission eligibility criteria.
- The successful applicant must commence their candidature by the end of 2020.
