A report presented to the Southland District Council’s water supply subcommittee meetings in November, says climate change has the most potential to affect the general wellbeing of the district, particularly over the next 20 to 80 years.

A heatwave is three or more days with a maximum temperature over 25 degrees Celsius.

A summer-long heat wave would kill a third of his 415 hectare land, and when it rained again the water would not soak in.

By the end of the century Southland will be warmer all year round, with the temperature expected to increase by one degree by 2040 and up to three degrees by 2090.
