Mankind is grossly unprepared for a catastrophic volcanic eruption that could kill hundreds of millions of people and cast the world back into a “pre-civilisation state”, a panel of geologists, economists and climate scientists from the European Science Foundation have warned, reports the Australian.

According to the article, there is a 5 to 10 per cent probability that a blast measuring 7 on the volcanic explositivity index (VEI 7) — unseen since the Tambora eruption in Indonesia killed 92,000 people in 1815 — would happen before 2100.
