Yemen: New database aims to help mitigate disasters

Sana’a - A training workshop on building a database to register the disasters in Yemen was launched today in Sana’a and will continue for four more days.

The workshop is held in cooperation and coordination between the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Ministry of Water and Environment represented by the Emergencies and Environmental Disasters Directorate, the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR), the Civil Defense and the World Bank.

The database aims at reducing the disasters and registering them in a unified system, the thing that will contribute positively to the planning and coordination processes, in addition to developing defense mechanisms to mitigate risks and develop early warning systems and early preparedness before the disaster, by using the available resources.

It is expected that the database will help to analyze the data disaster trends and effects in a systematic way which will allow relevant bodies to plan a preventive measures and better prepare to mitigate the effects of disasters on communities.

In the beginning of the launch ceremony, Mohammad Naciri, UNDP Yemen Deputy Country Director, outlined the activities of the “Disaster Management Preparations, and Recovery” project, which is funded by UNDP.

In addition, he expressed the importance of improving the communication and coordination between different related bodies, so they should work together to improve the information basket and decision making, in a way that help their communities to be better prepared to face any new danger.

In his turn, Majed Al Rifa’ee, the General Manager of the Emergencies and Environmental Disasters, said that “building a database has been proved useful through sorting disasters information, their losses and analysis, and reflecting them in graphs and maps. The process is under continuous development and improvement”.
