The research project "Changing Disasters" aims to explore the two-way relationship between disaster and society. It is vital to understand how modern disasters are shaped by societies – but it is no less vital to understand how contemporary societies are shaped by disasters.
The project is organised in three thematic clusters that cut across the traditional grid of scientific disciplines:
- Imaginations addresses the social, political, technical, and cultural aspects of interpreting disasters,
- Interventions investigates the trans-disciplinary and creative aspects of responding to disaster scenarios, and
- Transformations sets out to cover the trans-disciplinary aspects of the technical, institutional and social transformations in societies, initiated by disasters on a short- as well as a long-term basis.
The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
