The Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) of the University of Twente provides international postgraduate education, research and project services. The aim of ITC's activities is the international exchange of knowledge, focusing on capacity building and institutional development in developing countries and emerging economies.
The UNU-DRM Centre for Spatial Analysis and Disaster Risk Assessment at ITC (established in 2006 as UNU-ITC DGIM School) aims at training a new generation of natural hazard experts, disaster risk managers and decision makers capable of producing and applying up-to-date geographical information to reduce disaster risk.
The availability of good quality spatial information is crucial to many components of disaster risk reduction.
Remote Sensing and GIS technology helps for example to:
- Understand where and how natural hazard events and processes do occur;
- Map and monitor spatial extent and magnitude of landslides, floods, soil erosion and other hazards;
- Predict where and when hazards may occur in the future;
- Characterize and map elements at risk for different types of hazards;
- Estimate vulnerability for different hazard scenarios;
- Carry out multi-hazard risk assessment and prepare risk maps;
- Support participatory approaches to hazard and risk assessment;
- Carry out post-disaster damage assessment;
- Provide relevant geo-information for rehabilitation and reconstruction.
By sharing knowledge and expertise in the use of Remote Sensing and GIS UNU-DRM intends to contribute to local, regional and global environmental challenges.

The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
