The GEOMAR - Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel (GEOMAR) is a research institute that operates worldwide in all ocean basins and specializes in ocean dynamics, marine ecology, biogeochemistry, and ocean floor dynamics and circulation.

The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.

Papua New Guinea: Precursors of a catastrophic collapse

Geophysicists from the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research have published a study in which they analysed a landslide on Ritter Island that caused a tsunami in 1888. The research shows that sporadic, slow landslides on the island preceded a catastrophic collapse, providing insight into the dynamics of volcanic landslides.
