Helmholtz Zentrum München is the German Research Center for Environmental Health. It investigates important common diseases which develop from the interaction of lifestyle, environmental factors and personal genetic background, focusing particularly on diabetes mellitus, allergies and chronic lung diseases.
Helmholtz Zentrum München is a research institution of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Free State of Bavaria. It is a member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers.
The Center's mission is based on the following three pillars:
- Confronting one of the biggest challenges in society: improving people’s health.
- Conducting research in order to achieve a better understanding of how health and the environment are connected.
- Developing basic principles and applications to enable medicine to treat chronic diseases in the future.
In order to be able to provide specific benefits for society, the Center:
- Links the research areas of biomedicine and environmental research.
- Relies on excellent basic research, international experimental platforms, clinical cooperation groups and centers for translational medicine in cooperation with Munich’s universities and other leading national and international institutes.
- Attaches special importance to promoting young, up-and-coming scientists and to personal development.
- Pursues a number of measures to promote equal opportunities for men and women.
- Makes its scientific expertise available to political leaders, legislators and the public.
- Encourages scientific exchange and value creation, and promotes the commercial use of new technologies and the application of results.
The Center seeks to make substantial contributions to research at the top international level and thus improve human health.
The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
