Our people are dedicated to building a smarter planet. A world where intelligence is infused into the systems and processes that make business and society work better. IBM Canada is headquartered in Markham, Ontario, and has nationwide responsibilities for sales, marketing and service. Canada is also home to IBM’s largest semiconductor packaging and test facility in Bromont, Quebec and the largest software development organization in the country, with sites in Toronto, London, Ottawa, Fredericton, Saint John, Vancouver and Victoria. In 2012, IBM invested $90M in a modular data centre in Barrie, Ontario. Its innovative use of energy uses 60% less energy than is typical in a high-density server environment. Contained within this facility is Business Resiliency infrastructure. This infrastructure is used to recover customers from Information Technology and Facilities failures. Other resiliency sites include Markham, Ontario and Montreal, Quebec. As part of a global network of resiliency centres, IBM Canada provides resiliency for many Canadian and Caribbean Public and Private Sector organizations. By leveraging over 50 years of resiliency experience, IBM Canada brings pragmatic resiliency skills to it's customers. Disaster Reduction Goal: IBM Canada's goal is to promote resiliency in the Canadian public and private sectors. Through its Resiliency Outreach Program, within IBM Canada's Business Advisory Centre, we share experiences and perspective in the form of presentations, whitepapers and research. We leverage global experience and hone messages for specific stakeholders. As a thought leader, IBM Canada helps businesses and government departments craft resiliency plans and select infrastructure to avoid disasters or minimize their impact. Faster, more robust recovery leads to improved alignment with communities, volunteers, supplies, and funding. This in turn, helps communities to quickly return to normal operations. Though its Corporate Citizenship and Corporate Affairs organization, IBM Canada encourages employees to engage communities for disaster relief, humanitarian aid and support of service organizations. This support may also take the form of technology grants, volunteer hours or leadership. Our employee engagement model may help communities and the private sector respond to disaster events and or identify areas of risk. As a facilitator, IBM Canada brings together Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery stakeholders to promote dialogue and information sharing. Through this dialogue, plan disconnects may be avoided. This alignment can save time and effort when a disaster occurs.
IBM Canada is a member of the Disaster Risk Reduction - Private Sector Partnership (DRR-PSP) and has committed to the 5 Essentials for Business in Disaster Risk Reduction.
The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
