Mission

The Ministry of Information and Communications is the Government of Tonga's new engine for transition into a more connected and empowered society between its citizens and government, thus promoting a more accountable and transparent Government.

The Ministry is the main regulating body for all communication services, and has the role of lead communicator for government information in creating awareness of government policies, programs and activities.

The organization has no registered commitments.

The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.

Tonga launches new 10-year joint national action plan on climate change and disaster risk management

Tonga has launched its revised Joint National Action Plan on Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management. The plan plays a central role in guiding the government’s continuous efforts to build resilience to climate change and minimize disaster risks and is the result of years of thorough consultations conducted with various stakeholders.

56 Million Pa’anga Japan’s grant aid for the project for “Nationwide Early Warning System (NEWS) and Strengthening Disaster Communications”

Japan has provided Tonga a grant worth 2.8 billion Yen to fund the installation of emergency radio systems and early warning sound alert systems, including the provision of equipment and the construction of a headquarter building for Tonga Broadcasting Commission, TBC. These measures will help Tonga curtail the natural risks caused by its geographical characteristics.

NZDF-led projects boost drought resilience of Tongan communities

Tongan officials said community projects undertaken by a multinational task group led by the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) are expected to reduce the vulnerability of remote communities to the impact of drought. The projects are designed to improve water storage in two main islands in Tonga’s Ha’apai island group as part of the military Exercise Tropic Twilight 2016.
