Where cement and concrete are concerned, so is the Portland Cement Association: in manufacturing, in raising the quality of construction, in improving our product and its uses, in contributing to a better environment. In practice, this mandate means well-rounded programs of market development, education, research, technical services, and government affairs on behalf of PCA members-cement companies in the United States and Canada.
PCA is promoting resilience as a fundamental aspect of sustainability through out its market development, and codes/standards work in the U.S. This work reaches to both the technical audience of designers, building officials and policy makers as well as to the general public to raise awareness of the important of resilient community. A key component on our technical approach is the development of a “High Performance Building Requirements” amendment to the International Building Code, assisting municipalities to adopt, in whole or in part, commercial construction requirements which offers improved resistance to a range of natural disasters. This document has been reviewed and endorsed by the Institute for Business and Home Safety, the building science group for the U.S. property insurance industry. The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
