Mission

The University of Montana was founded in 1893 in the burgeoning pioneer town of Missoula, less than 90 years after Lewis and Clark and their Corps of Discovery explored the area. Since then, the University has nurtured a tradition of cultural and scientific exploration. Today, “The Discovery Continues” at UM – from a local, regional and global perspective into the next frontier of space.

Students receive a high-quality, well-rounded education and training for professional careers in the University’s three colleges – arts and sciences, forestry and conservation, and technology – and six schools – journalism, law, business, education, pharmacy and the fine arts.

The organization has no registered commitments.

The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.

USA: UM study suggests climate change limits forest recovery after wildfires
New research suggests that climate change makes it increasingly difficult for tree seedlings, which are vulnerable to hot and dry weather, to regenerate following wildfires in low-elevation forests, possibly contributing to abrupt forest loss. The results highlight how future fires in similar sites may catalyse transitions from forest to non-forest ecosystems.

USA: Decreasing number of rainy days in summer has increased Western wildfire
New research shows that significant declines in summer precipitation and lengthening dry spells during summer are major drivers of the increase in fire activity over the past three decades. This is contrary to the previous understanding that the increase is attributable only to warming temperatures and earlier snowmelt.

University of Montana study: forests may lose ability to protect against extremes of climate change
A recent study suggests that a warming climate in the Pacific Northwest would lessen the capacity of many forest microclimates to moderate climate extremes in the future. The ability of forests to buffer climate extremes is dependent on canopy cover and local moisture availability – both of which are expected to change as the Earth warms.
