The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.

Why is sea level rising faster in some places along the U.S. East Coast than others?

New research reveals that sea levels have risen much faster in some U.S. East Coast regions compared to others because of post-glacial rebound, whereby ice sheets during the last Ice Age caused some lands to be weighed down and others to rise up. Once the ice sheets melted, the former sprang up while the latter sank, causing spatial differences in sea level rise.

Greenland ice sheet melt "off the charts" compared with past four centuries

According to new research, climate change has accelerated melting of the Greenland Ice Sheet so dramatically that there is a 50% increase in total ice sheet meltwater runoff versus the start of the industrial era. As a result, Greenland melt is currently adding more to sea level than at any time during the last three and a half centuries, if not thousands of years.

Human-engineered changes on Mississippi River increased extreme floods

A new study has revealed for the first time the last 500-year flood history of the Mississippi River. It shows a dramatic rise in the size and frequency of extreme floods in the past century -- mostly due to projects to straighten, channelize, and bound the river with artificial levees.
