Artificial intelligence, disasters & marginalised groups: Early warning systems
A DRR Dynamics report launched in September 2023 looked into the issue of artificial intelligence (AI) and the role it has and will have in the future on disaster risk reduction (DRR) policy and practice. Specifically, it looked into how AI will impact DRR work on the inclusion and recognition of marginalised and hyper-marginalised groups.
This increased focus on early warning systems, combined with a constant drive for efficiency and improvement within the DRR field prompted this addendum. Indeed, given the role of early warning systems continues to grow in importance in strategies to lessen death, injury, and economic losses from disasters, there will be a temptation to rely to on AI to help advise on how to design and implement such systems. Within that framing, this addendum will consider some of the major themes of this topic and provide some suggested areas in which consideration should be given.
