Can one day make a difference in disaster preparedness in the Caribbean?
A review of the one day disaster preparedness and first aid training programme after Hurricane Tomas
This report describes a disaster preparedness project started in 2009 that was carried out by the Order of St John local organizations in seven countries throughout the Caribbean (Antigua and Barbuda; Barbados; Dominica; Grenada; Guyana; Jamaica; and Saint Lucia). The aim of the project was to deliver free, one day training in disaster and hazard awareness and emergency First Aid in order to increase the resilience of vulnerable communities. The report concludes with results suggesting some changes need to be made to the course and training methodology in order to maximise the potential to create behaviour change.
