CARE’s perspective on the MDGs: building on success to accelerate progress towards 2015
MDG Summit, 20-22 September 2010:
This briefing paper presents CARE’s policy recommendations on the way to achieve the Target 3 (Halve, between 1990 and 2015, the proportion of people who suffer from hunger) of the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger. It features as case study a programme in Bangladesh where tremendous results in overall food security have been achieved and which reveal positive impacts in areas related to nutrition, women’s empowerment, governance, and disaster risk reduction. It then describes the key factors for success, scale up, and replication, as well as specific principles of implementation, including a comprehensive approach combining risk reduction and disaster mitigation activities with cross-sectoral livelihoods interventions.
