The Chernobyl disaster and beyond: Implications of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030
This paper examines the role of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR) in relation to technological disasters such as the Chernobyl accident in 1986. The authors highlight the importance of improving the scientific and public understanding of risk and of using science for decision-making.
Key recommendations to the scientific community are:
- Strengthen the evidence base in support of the implementation of this framework.
- Promote scientific research of disaster risk patterns, causes and effects.
- Identify research and technology gaps and set recommendations for research priority areas.
- Contribute to the update of the terminology on disaster risk reduction.
