Climate change and education, Bangladesh
This publication addresses physical and social vulnerability of Bangladesh in relation to climate change hazards, such as floods, cyclones and storm surges, tornadoes, riverbank erosion, drought and sea level rise; and their impact on education and schools reconstruction, as well as textbooks and other materials supply.
It suggests some adaptation measures, including: (i) hazard specific school design and construction; (ii) existing schools retrofitting to withstand further hazards; (iii) flexible school calendar and test schedule; (iv) provision of emergency pool of teachers and educational materials; (v) boat schools; (vi) food, water and medicine storage for children in schools; (vii) climate change inclusion into curriculum for both teachers and students; and (viii) community awareness about continuing education during hazards.
It also advocates for a shift from a response mode to an adaptation and mitigation mode, for future education programmes to be screened from the adaptation and mitigation point of views, as well as for a detail cost analysis could to be carried out for adaptation and mitigation in the education sector.
