Cranking up the intensity: climate change and extreme weather events
This report outlines the link between climate change and extreme weather events and outlines state-by-state projections. As global temperatures continue to rise, weather events will continue to become more extreme. Cranking Up The Intensity finds that while the links between climate change and some extreme weather events such as bushfires and heatwaves are well-established, the evidence linking climate change to storms and heavy rainfall is also growing.
This document presents the following key findings:
- Climate change is influencing all extreme weather events in Australia;
- Some of the most severe climate impacts the world has experienced have occurred in 2016;
- Across Australia, extreme weather events are projected to worsen as the climate warms further;
- The impacts of extreme weather events will likely become much worse unless global greenhouse gas emissions are reduced rapidly and deeply.
A global effort, with Australia contributing its fair share, to rapidly and deeply reduce greenhouse gas emissions is urgently required to protect Australia from increasingly severe extreme weather.
