Disaster risk management: fast facts
This paper considers disaster risk management as a crucial element of the Maldives’ sustainable development. It seeks to enable communities to manage impact of climate change and reduce disaster risk vulnerabilities, with a main objective centred on capacity building and institutional strengthening for disaster risk reduction.
The paper describes key projects under disaster risk management in the country, including integrating Disaster Risk Reduction in the school curriculum and co-curricular activities and in the National Building Code, strengthening capacity at the national and community levels for early warning for tsunami and other hazards, or providing the island community with vertical evacuation to around 1000 people during times of natural disasters such as tsunami and flooding. It aslo details some key achievements and future direction (resource requirements).
