Disaster risk reduction and community resilience
This document gives a clear picture of the key disaster risk reduction (DRR) and community resilience (CR) concepts and terms used in World Vision. It also provides examples of how DRR and CR can be applied in practice at a community level in a very practical way.
It introduces a number of activities required for the practice of disaster risk reduction in order to build community resilience: (i) reduce vulnerabilities – conditions determined by physical, social, economic and environmental factors or processes that increase the susceptibility of a community; (ii) mitigate the impact of natural and man-made situations that have the potential to adversely impact the lives and livelihoods of communities; and (iii) develop and enhance capacities in individuals, communities and institutions that can be used productively to reduce risk and build up resilience. It asserts that the greater the capacity of a community and its people and institutions, the more resilient to risk they become.
