Drones in humanitarian action: a guide to the use of airborne systems in humanitarian crises

This report is an in-depth analysis of the role that drones can play in the various stages of humanitarian crises. It provides an overview of the strengths and weaknesses of the technology for different scenarios and can provide guidance to decision makers who consider using drones. 

The report is based on 14 case studies from 10 countries, including flood mapping for disaster risk reduction in Tanzania and providing data on mudslides risk in Tajikistan. The publication further draws on expert consultations, stakeholder meetings and a survey of professionals in 61 countries. In addition to a general introduction to the technology, the report focuses on the use of drones to gather information, for mapping high-risk areas or recovery efforts, transporting cargo and to support search and rescue efforts.
