Egypt: Decree of the Prime Minister no.1537 of the year 2009 on formation of a national committee for crises/disasters management

Issued at the Council of Ministers on 3rd 27 May 2009, the Prime Minister's decree on the formation of a national committee for crises and disaster management addresses: the composition of the committee; the objectives of the committee including: i) the development of national policies and frameworks, ii) scientific and technical capacity strengthening, iii) enhanced use and provision of technology, iv) enhanced promotion and cooperation among scientific and expert communities, and v) promotion of a national public awareness programme, each for strengthened disaster management and disaster risk reduction in Egypt.

1. Article no. I - Preamble: "A National Committee for Crises/ Disasters Management and Disaster Risk Reduction shall be formed within the Egyptian Council of Ministers and shall comprise the following dignitaries".
2. Article no. III – Preamble: "The committee shall put the national institutional framework into action in a compatible manner with the requirements of the International Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction".
3. Article III – Item no. 12: "Assuming the roles and responsibilities of the National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction set out in the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction and the priorities of Hyogo Framework for Action".

Accordingly, the National Committee for Crisis/ Disaster Management & DRR is the Egyptian National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction.
