Environmental and economic benefits of climate change mitigation and adaptation in Antarctica
This paper explore three key issues that relate to the management of Antarctica in the context of climate change: (i) climate change mitigation; (ii) climate change adaptation, in terms of the management strategies that could limit the vulnerability of Antarctica’s ecosystems to the negative impacts of climate change; and (iii) climate science, which includes scientific research and monitoring from Antarctica that plays an important role in informing policy decisions, providing the evidence, and in reminding the world of the urgency to address climate change. It explores some of the concepts and examples of climate change adaptation that are in use worldwide, and examines possible climate change adaptation options for the Antarctic and the Southern Ocean based on future impacts of climate change.
